A Chance Bothe Foundation was founded on some very simple principles:
Drivers today are more distracted than ever.
Teen drivers have the least experience and are therefore at the highest risk for error.
It only takes one second to change a life forever.
This foundation was the response to a brutal car accident involving a happy, energetic and charismatic young man, Chance Ryan Bothe. While coming home from class one day, he sent a quick text to a friend…it only took a couple of seconds. Before he knew it, and before anything could be done, he was through a guardrail and plummeting nose first into the bottom of a ravine. The series of events that followed were terrifying and traumatic as his life hung in the balance for days. To everyone’s surprise, he has met each battle and set back with a fighting passion that has been unbelievable. Chance will survive this accident, he is lucky. But that is not always the case. In fact, texting and driving is responsible for nearly 6,000 deaths each year. If that statistic doesn’t make you stop and think, wrap your head around these:
While teenagers are driving, they spend about ten percent of the time OUTSIDE the driving lane.
Texting while driving can make a young driver’s reaction time as slow as that of a 70 year old.
Answering a text takes your attention off the road for approximately 5 seconds. The length of a FOOTBALL FIELD.
These stats aren’t meant to scare you. However, it is the goal and mission of this foundation to spread education and awareness on this contemporary and relevant issue. We at UnSend pledge to continue to make people everywhere more aware of the dangers of texting and driving. We will reach out to our communities, leaders and loved ones in an attempt to get some control over an issue that is claiming lives.
So here is the question. What can you do? Make a pledge and take a stand to “Keep It In Your Pants!” That text can wait. Your life cannot. Don’t let a text message be your famous last words.
